Yay I got the banner to show w/o it being a pain.

On to school: Kaelee finished her first binder this week. We thought she had also finished science, but then realized it was only the chapter test. I made up the schedule for the next three weeks using Donna Young’s excel planner.

We’ll finish up Math by the first week in December. So we’ll just do some generic worksheets for the rest of the month.

We also finished up the Book of Mormon study we were doing. Although I really like them, Kaelee doesn’t so I decided rather than order the next set we’re reading from Mother Stories from the Book of Mormon. I’m not sure what we’ll study next year; it depends upon what’s the course of study for Sunday School. I think it’s Doctrine and Covenants and Church History. We’ll most likely get Church History for LDS Families or Scripture Study for LDS Families: D&C and use that as a basis for scripture study.

Kaelee’s been reading Heidi and she’s almost done with that as well. Even having had to “make” her read it, she’s enjoying it.

Kaelee’s really looking forward to December. It’s our light month and we do a lot of fun stuff.

Right now, Caleb is being *silly*. He’s too tired and wired on ice cream.

Well, this week went pretty good. Once again no pictures, but Kaelee has been doing really well in keeping up with her work. Probably because she now get’s one “Mom Dollar” (more on that later) every day she finishes all her work. She grumbles a bit about the reading, especially because she doesn’t see much point to some of it, but it’s going well.

Fractions are still giving her fits. I’m going to need to print out some more Math Mammoth sheets for practice. She still hasn’t quite gotten it, but I think with doing a few fraction problems a day along with the rest of math she should be okay. We’re moving on to tables next so I think she’ll do okay with those.

We finally got the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia in. I’d ordered it from Classical Conversation back in August, but they never shipped it so I finally ordered it from ebay. We had the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History, but it didn’t line up well enough and was too much of a struggle.

Latin is going a lot better. I’ve linked to each of the games and vocabulary mp3 on my home page so all Kaelee has to do to listen to the vocabulary each day is go to my home page which I keep up at all times.

Kaelee’s almost done with science. She’s managed to wiz right through it.

And as much as I love my Levenger circa punch, I think it’s not going to work out. The pages keep coming out on Kaelee. So we’ll see what we end up doing. Maybe not so many pages in one book.

Sheesh, I can’t believe it’s October already. No pictures today b/c Kaelee is still doing school so she has her binder still. We’ve (she’s) lost the science book. She’s says she’s read it already (it is small), but it doesn’t help to not have it when it’s time for worksheets and stuff. Yesterday we did all of her experiments for the week. Last year (?) I bought a microscope and it’s wonderful. Of course, once we got it out to really use it I realized I didn’t have an accessory kit. We had a couple of blank slide and covers, but I’m going to need to order a kit from hometrainingtools.com.

Math has been put on hold while we do fractions worksheets from Math Mammoth. I think they do a good job explaining again and lots more practice for Kaelee.

I managed to lose GWG’s workbook. We have the student text, but not the workbook. I must have put it some place when I was making up the binders and now I can’t find it. But there’s grammar in Latin and writing so I’m not too worried right now. I was even thinking about dropping one or at least cutting back so there’s not so much.

Also, despite having the largest Circa rings, 6 weeks worth of school cannot fit in a binder. I think it’s going to have to be 4 weeks.

This week went pretty well except for more problems with math. We had previously been doing two assignments a day, but now it’s just not working. Kaelee needs more time so we’ve switched to one assignment and Intensive Practice as necessary. So I had to go and rearrange next month’s binder. It was easy with the Circa papers, but still a pain.

One of the pictures is of Caleb’s “schoolwork” he wanted to write on Kaelee’s paper so I gave him some paper to write on. The next two pictures are of things we picked up on vacation. A really old reading primer and a art game. Both are really interesting.

We started school up again this week. We actually did a week or two before we left for Pennsylvania, but it was kind of finishing up last year stuff. So here’s this past week’s Weekly Report. I shrink the pictures so that they’re not too big, but I think I shrink them too much because the quality is just gone.

I put all of Kaelee’s school stuff in one Circa binder. I did it because there were too many days that stuff wasn’t getting done because I/she forgot there was another binder somewhere. Even with a schedule it wasn’t working out like I wanted. Stuff was getting misplaced. So I tore up most of her workbooks and put them in. Some stuff, like History and Geography, I copied onto one sheet and then printed it out. So far it’s working pretty well. We both like it.

Math and Latin are giving us issues. Latin because it hasn’t been done in a while so we need to go back and review. Math because it’s finally getting hard (fractions and such). There was a complete meltdown this week, but hopefully we’ll both get better about it.

I’m hoping to get it going within the next couple of weeks. But the first picture is of Kaelee doing somethings from Draw, Write, Now.

Spelling is going really well. We’re almost through with the program and then we’ll move on to copywork. I’m noticing there still are a lot of little misspelled words in her writing, but she’s doing good overall.

I really like Writing Tales; Kaelee, not so much. I think it’s harder than Writing Strands, as in it requires more work.

Grammar is going well too. I need to order grade 4 of Growing with Grammar, but I’m hesitant to do it, because I worry that she’s doing too much grammar with Writing Tales and Lively Latin. I really like GWG though. So we’ll see.

Math needs a lot of work. Kaelee was doing really well remembering her times tables before we broke for Christmas, but a month+ off just had her forgetting everything, so we need to start drilling again.

I was a complete slacker last week with the weekly report. School happened, but I didn’t do anything. So here’s how things went this week:

Latin: Kaelee loves Lively Latin. She just whips right through it. I don’t have to bug her to do her flashcards or anything. She comes and kicks me off the computer so she can listen to the audio and make sure she’s getting it correct. Lively Latin is a keeper for sure. We should finish up Lesson 1 on Monday, I think.Grammar: We had some discussion about punctuation, but more is needed. I think it’s just more practice is necessary which GWG provides.Handwriting: Kaelee’s cursive handwriting is getting much better, but she still hates writing in cursive. I’m letting it go for now, but I think she’ll have to start writing some in cursive soon.

History: Lots of problems with history. I think it’s comprehension that’s a problem. We’re going to have to start talking about the questions as Kaelee does them, instead of after she does them incorrectly. She does fine with T/F and multiple choice, but not short answer. I could send Kaelee to public school if I wanted her to be able to recite facts. We homeschool so she can go the extra step and think for herself. You can see on her page one of our handwriting problems. Near horizontal writing.

Spelling: She’s almost done with her spelling book and then only one more spelling book until she’s done with her program. Then I’ll just find copywork/dictation to help her with spelling.

Math: Kaelee’s doing pretty well with Singapore. She likes it; she just does too much in her head. I’m afraid to start covering their “Mental Math” b/c she does so much of it already. And not all of it is right. Maybe being taught how to do it versus just doing it will increase her ability. We have problems with one thing. Not doing everything. You can see where she didn’t answer half of the questions for one problem. And with not writing anything down she often makes little mistakes. I’ve decided to force her to be more careful I’m going to make her go back and redo every problem she missed instead of it just being corrected. Hopefully, then she’ll slow down and get things right like I know she can.

Except for Thursday night. It’s amazing how quickly life/house/school can go downhill, but how long it takes to get it back up to speed. I have assignment sheets that I’m going to print out to keep us both on task and completing everything for next week.Math: Only one day of Singapore math done this week. Kaelee’s skipping every other problem because for the most part it’s review. I’ve just heard it’s good to make sure the student understands Singapore’s way of doing problems. But Kaelee’s happy to have a workbook to write in again. She really disliked having to write the problem out.

Science: No science yet this week, we only just got Real Science 4 Kids.

Language Arts: More writing this week that was good. I had to remind Kaelee that you really do need to do every step the instructions say. She likes to skip things she thinks aren’t important. She gets this from her mother. Apparently, though we need to sit down and discuss punctuation some. She says she doesn’t know when to use quotes, even though she almost always get it right in her workbook.

Religion: Kaelee’s almost done with Book of Mormon Stories. I’d forgotten to print out more of the lessons for Book of Mormon Discovery so she did the drawing and read a lot.

Latin: We started on Lively Latin this week. Kaelee picked out her Latin name. It’s Arria. She rolls her rrrs very well. I can’t at all.

Art: I’d ordered Draw, Write, Now on a whim. Mainly because I was also ordering StartWrite software to make a copybook. Kaelee opened it up and sat down and started drawing. Of course she picked and chose what she drew and didn’t always do it like they said. Such as the lines to keep things in perspective. Once again, it’s the doing every step thing.

Add to Kaelee not feeling well with a cold/sore throat, and I said, “Forget it. Just do a lot of reading.” So Kaelee finished up Freedom Train and started on Turn Homeward, Hannalee. She’s also done some spelling apparently. But the school stuff I’ve ordered has been shipped so we’ll get more school stuff next week. Hopefully, it’ll be better.

This week wasn’t so good. Caleb decided he wanted to have colic again, after we thought we’d figured out how to lessen it. So I slept a lot. Kaelee is so good about getting up and doing school though. Monday, being a holiday, and having relatives in town meant we didn’t do school. And we didn’t do school on Wednesday either for some reason. So we had a very short week of lessons. I decided this week we would stop doing Trail Guide to World Geography because our atlas just wasn’t cutting it. There isn’t even a section discussing the continents. So until the new atlas comes in the mail from Rainbow Resources we’re not doing geography. I did buy Lively Latin to start up next week. We’ll see how it goes.

Math: After reviewing what’s left of Rod & Staff Math 3, I decided we’ll switch to Singapore for next year. I like R&S, but I think they’re lacking in teaching somethings and Singapore is heavily recommended so I’ve ordered that. R&S worked well for what I wanted it, which is a more student led learning. I needed that for my pregnancy and recovery. I figure we have about a month left of third grade so we’ve caught up pretty quickly.

Science: We’re not really doing science yet, still waiting on our books and to more or less finish up history, but Kaelee has been wanting to do some of the things I ordered. She chose an experiment from her Experiment book about dissolving washing soda, salt, and sugar in water and watching crystals form. It didn’t work so well. The salt worked, but the sugar only attracted insects, and the soda just didn’t work at all. Not sure what went wrong, but she liked checking them all out.

Language Arts: Growing with Grammar is going well. Kaelee’s picking up on everything pretty quickly and seems to be keeping it too. Kaelee wrote a story for writing. I’m impressed with how good the story was, but she’s always been really creative. It’s just the details, like punctuation, we need to work on. She also wrote it pretty well; we’ve been having problems with her handwriting sloping seriously to the left.

Religion: Kaelee’s been whipping through Book of Mormon Discovery. The way she’s going she should be done and ready for level 2 soon. She really likes reading the scriptures. I’m going to need to find something for the Old or New Testament for next year (5th) that’ll keep her interested also.

We really need to get our “extra” school stuff done as well, but for right now, these are all things that Kaelee can do mostly on her own. I’m hoping 4th grade can be more mommy taught again. Hopefully, about the time the house is done, Caleb will be doing better.
